It sounds as if the past is coming back to haunt Oliver Queen in the fifth season of Arrow. In describing the big bad for the season, executive producer Wendy Mericle revealed that it is someone that Ollie had a hand in sending down a villainous path.

In the San Diego Comic-Con 2016 preview edition of TV Guide, Mericle says that Arrow Season 5’s villain, “is somebody Oliver unwittingly created in Season 1 when he was a killer in a hood. This guy is going to be collateral damage who lost someone to the Hood and [has] spent the last several years training and plotting for revenge. He will be a true dark mirror to Oliver Queen.” It seems certain citizens of Star City don’t take kindly to having their family and loved ones murdered by rogue, unaccountable vigilantes with a fatalistic sense of justice.
Whoever this revenge-hungry person from Ollie’s past is, he won’t be the only problem Team Arrow, or what’s left of it, has to deal with. “When we come back in Season 5, [Star City] is overrun with crime,” says Mericle, adding that Star City is an easy target for corruption and gang activity.
Sounds like a busy season for Arrow, and that’s not even counting the four-part crossover with The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, or accounting revisiting Oliver’s time in Russia or the fallout of the season premiere revealing Black Canary’s last words to Oliver.
Speaking of the season premiere, Arrow returns to the CW for Season 5 on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
