First impressions are of course important, but sometimes things and people require a second look. Wonder Woman specializes in that sort of thing, and now has a new buddy for all of her trouble.

In fact, they even have some similarities to the father-son relationship that Marvel’s Star-Lord has with Baby Groot, though this little guy does not have Groot’s flair for dance moves. Oh, and he’s not little.

Spoilers incoming for Wonder Woman Annual #1, so you’ve been warned.

In the fourth story of the Annual titled “The Last Kaiju”, Argus forces find themselves fighting an enormous Kaiju-like monster that has surfaced from the ocean. The monster is clearly inspired by Godzilla and films like Pacific Rim, and it doesn’t take long for Wonder Woman to show up and take it on.

As she battles the beast she ensnares it with her lasso, realizing that she understands the language it speaks. It turns out the creature is not senseless at all, but wandering and scared, as the little guy hatched after his mother was already dead. He grew up on an unoccupied island and has been alone ever since. His travels brought him here, where he encountered humanity for the first time.

As the fighter jets attempt to take him out, Wonder Woman defends him from their fire. She then takes him somewhere far away, saying “Trust me, little one. Please calm your heart. Where we’re going, they cannot follow”

She takes him to Dinosaur Island. As he sits among those of equal size and stature, Diana says “You’re not as alone as you thought.” He’s clearly smiling and joyful to be amongst others like himself, and Diana doesn’t stop there. She also says “I’ll come once a month, I promise, and if ever you are in need I’ll be here sooner. I’ll tell you stories, bring you gifts, and lead others like you here if any exist”.

She then throws a large tree in the air as he goes to fetch it. While he has no name as of yet, Diana now has her own adorable charge to take care of, and hopefully, this won’t be the last time fans see him pop up.

Granted, he doesn’t say his name over and over again like Groot does, but he’s just as delightful as the lovable Marvel character and should be as big a fan favorite as well.
