Wonder Woman Director Reveals Why A Major Scene Was Nearly Cut

In just a few days, the public will get a chance to watch Wonder Woman come to life once more on the big screen. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as the DC heroine following Batman v Superman, but her new film will be all about Wonder Woman. The standalone will give fans a taste of Diana Prince’s origins against a World War I backdrop. And, now, the film’s director has revealed that one immensely important scene was nearly cut from the film.

Speaking to Fandango, Patty Jenkins told the site that she had to convince studio executives about one of Wonder Woman‘s formational scenes. The footage in question is known as “No Man’s Land” as it shows Diana stepping into the red zone between British and German forces on the battlefield. Wonder Woman goes across the deadly zone to save citizens who’ve been trapped by the gunfire, and Jenkins said the dramatic scene is the one which shows Diana of Themyscira become a bonafide hero.

“It’s my favorite scene in the movie and it’s the most important scene in the movie,” Jenkins revealed “It’s also the scene that made the least sense to other people going in, which is why it’s a wonderful victory for me.”

“I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains,” she continued. “So when I started to really hunker in on the significance of No Man’s Land, there were a couple people who were deeply confused, wondering, like, ‘Well, what is she going to do? How many bullets can she fight?’ And I kept saying, ‘It’s not about that. This is a different scene than that. This is a scene about her becoming Wonder Woman.’”

To convince her coworkers, Jenkins said she began storyboarding the “No Man’s Land” sequence early on. She wanted to have a spot-on pitch for the scene, and DC Entertainment agreed. The once-endangered scene has now come to define Wonder Woman as a key moment, and critics are voiced just how grateful they are that the footage made the cut. And, of course, Jenkins is pretty pleased as well.

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2, 2017.
