Shazam! has been in pre-production for a few weeks and now it looks like director David F. Sandberg is heading to Canada to start filming early next year.
According to What's Filming, principal photography on the upcoming DCEU film is set to take place in Toronto, Ontario starting in February. The site currently lists Shazam! as filming between February 5, 2018 and May 4, 2018.
The listing also included the film's reported working title, ‘Franklin.’ As was previously reported, some have speculated that ‘Franklin’ is a reference to Benjamin Franklin and his kite experiments with lightning. As one of Billy Batson/Shazam’s superpowers is lightning manipulation, ‘Franklin’ is a near perfect code name for the film.
Even with these filming dates much of Shazam! remains a mystery. While both John Cena and Galavant's Joshua Sasse have been rumored as possible actors for the role of Billy Batson's older, superpowered self, fans still don't know exactly who will be bringing Shazam to life. What fans do know is that Sandberg is clearly enjoying himself in the lead up to filming. The director has posted several amusing updates documenting the process, including concept art for the titular hero’s costume, humorous ‘first looks’ at the film’s script, and an increasingly ridiculous tower of empty Coke Zero cans.
Shazam! was originally slated for an April 5, 2019 release date. No additional update about release date has been provided.
