Power Rangers reboot star Ludi Lin will get another big superhero movie role when he appears in James Wan’s Aquaman next year, the first solo film release from the DC Extended Universe after Justice League this fall. It sounds like it’s going to be a doozy.

In a recent radio interview over in Canada (via CBR) Lin was describing the DCEU Aquaman movie, and said that James Wan “described his vision as Star Wars underwater because it is!”

Hearing Aquaman compared to Star Wars will be good news to some fans, and a source of skepticism to others. Either way, Lin elaborated on the comparison in a way that makes it sound like Aquaman will be a one-of-a-kind experience for audiences everywhere:

A Whole New World…

As Lin explains: 

The difference between Aquaman and the other superheroes in the DC Universe, is that it exists almost in a different world… All the physics are different, their weapons are different, the characters are very unique. It’s just super cool.

That should make the Star Wars comparison a bit more clear: George Lucas’ original Star Wars film transported viewers to a new world (more like galaxy) they’d never been to before. Aquaman aims to transport viewers to an undersea world they’ve never been to before. 

The note about the physics is especially interesting, as the undersea setting of the film makes a very different kind of mobility and lifestyle possible. Another particular area where Aquaman will be unique is with action and combat, and both are of particular concern to Ludi Lin as his Aquaman character will likely be mixed up in some big action sequences. 

In the film, Lin plays Murk, a general of the Atlantean army. Murk is a more recent creation of Geoff Johns, the DC Comics and DC Films creative head who overhauled Aquaman in the mid-2000s. That origin will be of little relevance, however, as Lin reveals that his Murk will be nothing like the comics:

I like it when people pigeon-hole me… because then it gives me a chance to try to break out of it. You put a wall in front of me, I want to try to break down that wall. So, this is Murk [and] I think he’s going to be pretty different from the original conception. But he’s going to be pretty remarkable as well. It’s been a pleasure working with some amazing people.

Aquaman will be in theaters on October 5, 2018.
