Batman’s Role In Wonder Woman Explained

Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, completing the DC Extended Universe’s Trinity alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman. While neither Cavill nor Affleck returns the favor with an appearance in Wonder Woman, Affleck’s Bruce Wayne is vital to instigating the film’s plot.

Wonder Woman begins in the present day, kicking off as Diana Prince receives a delivery from Wayne Enterprises. The package features a photograph of Wonder Woman standing with Steve Trevor and the rest of their team in the town of Veld during World War I after Wonder Woman led the charge to liberate the town and before it was bombed with gas by General Ludendorff.

The photograph is the original copy of the photo that Bruce Wayne discovered in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Bruce found it and returned it to Diana as a gift but also because he wants to hear Wonder Woman‘s origin story.

Receiving the photo in the film’s frame story is what causes Diana to think back upon her first days in the world of man. These memories make up the bulk of the events of Wonder Woman. At the film’s conclusion, we see Diana begin to compose an email response to Bruce, presumably telling him the story that the audience just experienced.

This frame story makes it clear that Diana and Bruce are building on their relationship. Perhaps Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor’s band of misfits will even serve to partly inspire the formation of the Justice League.
