5 DC Comics Character Costumes the DCEU Got Right

Recently we’ve been getting more looks at Wonder Woman, Batman, and other heroes of the Justice League, which has once again sparked debate about the merits of DC/Warner Bros. adaptation strategy.

The DC Extended Universe tends to get a bad wrap for the mistakes and missteps its made along the way to creating a live-action DC Comics movie universe. However, the creative minds behind the DCEU haven’t messed up every character adaptation they’ve had to tackle – in fact, they’ve managed to bring quite a few characters to the screen in total faithfulness to their comic book roots. In some cases, they’ve even made sensible improvements.

Here are 5 DC Comics Character Costumes that the DCEU Got Right!

Batman

Let’s just start at the beginning: Ben Affleck’s Batman has had a great costume adaptation for the DCEU. 

His Batman v Superman regular costume and armored costume were faithful adaptations of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and his new Justice League outfits look to have been upgraded well!

Superman

Henry Cavill’s Superman got a controversial redesign for Man of Steel. The costume material and chest insignia were changed to reflect an “alien skin” aesthetic, the red briefs were ditched, and the costume was genearlly given sharper, more modern details and flair (like a CGI cape). 

It’s taken fans some getting used to, but Cavill’s Superman costume has since become part of the zeitgeist – and is thankfully better than the “New 52” armored look that took over the comic books around the time of Man of Steel‘s release. 

Wonder Woman

It’s taken Wonder Woman 75 years to make it to the big screen, and along the way there was big debate about how to get her costume right. 

We haven’t yet seen the finished film, but it’s safe to say that most DC Comics fans approve of Wonder Woman’s movie costume. That’s a far way we’ve come, from back when news of Gal Gadot snagging the role set Internet trolls into a frenzy. 

Aquaman

Aquaman is the DC Comics character who has probably suffered the most mockery from fans and haters alike over the years. It’s not hard to see why – what with his niche power set and flamboyantly “comic bookish” costume. 

The DCEU gets extra points for taking the Aquaman comic book concept and making a smart deviation in order to realize it on the movie screen. Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman looks like a real underseas king. with his sunken treasure armor and fierce trident. By the time Jame Wan’s Aquaman movie hits screens, we expect that viewers will be all too happy to have this costume, as opposed to something closer to the comics. 

Harley Quinn

As one of the biggest fan-favorites in the DC Universe, adapting Harley Quinn for the Suicide Squad movie was a massive challenge. Luckily, DC/WB made a perfect casting pick in Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) – and then, gave her a quality costume to work with. 

Harley Quinn’s costume in the movie is definitely inspired by her comic book counterpart; however, Suicide Squad director David Ayer also added his own LA gangland style to the character, resulting in something of a new look for Harley. While some hardcore fans weren’t into it at first, Robbie has since come along and totally owned her version of Harley Quinn. Now, you’ll hear few fans complaining about how she looked in the role.
