In last night’s premiere of Gotham, Bruce Wayne finally took some serious strides toward becoming Batman. From disappearing while talking with Jim Gordon, to growling at a criminal, the young Mr. Wayne looked well on his way toward donning a cowl in the near future.

According to executive producer John Stephens, this is going to be how Bruce operates most of this season, inching closer to the iconic comic character without ever actually taking on his persona.

“No. We’re not gonna move towards the bat iconography or the assumption of his sort of bat-like qualities to inspire terror in anybody,” Stephens told us. “We won’t go that far but a bunch of other elements about trying to make people afraid and finding other ways to make bad guys afraid, he will be exploring that.”

As we mentioned earlier, and as you probably noticed in the season premiere, Bruce has already started exploring those “other ways” Stephens was talking about.

Most notably, Bruce is starting to look at Jim Gordon as a business partner, rather than just a mentor. That partnership is a classic piece of Batman’s story in the comics, so Bruce’s will to work with the only honest man in the GCPD takes him even close to Bat-status.

New episodes of Gotham will air on Fox Thursday nights, at 8 p.m. ET.
