If you’ve ever wanted to see a Gotham musical, you’ll finally have your chance tonight. “A Dark Knight: Let Them Eat Pie” focuses mostly on the villainous Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris), and it’s set to include a musical number performed by the Broadway actor.

The episode features a storyline inspired by Sweeney Todd, whom Michael Cerveris portrayed on Broadway, earning him a Tony nomination. We had a chance to catch up with Gotham co-executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt to talk about the episode, as well as the musical number, and it sounds even more insane than we had previously imagined.

“Well, in this episode, the Pyg has [already] had this run-in with Gordon where he was in disguise as the cop and Gordon mentioned to him how the rot in Gotham was from high to low,” Wynbrandt told us. “It sort of inspired a thought for the Pyg that he has been sort of going after the cops but the Gotham elite are equally complicit in the City’s downfall and in the fact that the corruption is allowed to flourish. So this week he’s setting his sights on the Gotham elite but, to really give them sort of a taste of their own medicine, he goes a little Sweeney Todd on them.

“What’s really fun about this episode is you really get to see the Pyg playing all these different personas. You get to see him evoke a bit of beautiful theater in this story, which is really fun. It’s that balance of dark and humor that our show seems to be able to find that sweet spot better than most and this episode is 100 percent an example of that to the fullest.”

When we asked about the musical number in the episode, Wynbrandt revealed that it’s a take on a song that may theatre fans will recognize.

“It’s an homage to [the show] Chicago,” the producer said. “I don’t want to spoil it because you’ll see, but yeah, it comes from that show.”

“A Dark Knight: Let Them Eat Pie” airs on Fox tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
