Friends, Green Lantern, X-Men: The Last Stand… if ever there was a lineup of TV to make you question your life decisions, then see above.
Green Lantern pretty much epitomizes DC and Warner Bros.’ failure to get a superhero movie universe off the ground in the early 2010s, as Marvel was just building toward the milestone of The Avengers. Poor Ryan Reynolds saw his career hit a major slump due in part to his role of Hal Jordan / Green Lantern in the movie – though he did get the conciliation prize of meeting his future wife Blake Lively while making the film.
After Green Lantern‘s misfire, DC and WB had to go back to the drawing board to build their DC Extended Universe, going with a more “real-world” approach featuring characters like Superman and Batman, instead of going full-on cosmic with the Green Lantern mythos. Ironically, Green Lantern has become the problem child of the new DCEU, as we’re still waiting for the character and his mythos to be reintroduced. A Green Lantern Corps movie is still scheduled for 2020. Ryan Reynolds will continue his new hit superhero franchise with Untitled Deadpool Sequel in June 2018.
Justice League is now playing in theaters. The film will be followed in the DC Extended Universeby Aquaman on December 21, 2018, Wonder Woman 2 on November 1, 2019, Shazam on April 5, 2019, Cyborg in 2020, and Green Lantern Corps in 2020.
