Comic book readers who grabbed today’s issue of Suicide Squad got a pretty good sense for what the forthcoming, weekly Justice League vs. Suicide Squad event is likely to entail.
With a Squad of his own assembled, the human supremacist Maxwell Lord is ready to take on both Amanda Waller and the Justice League, and bring some characters back into the spotlight in a big way while doing it.
Lord’s gambit will play out ahead of Justice League of America‘s anticipated relaunch, in which two members of his villains’ squad will have starring roles.
The story is reinventing Killer Frost for the post-Rebirth DC Universe, and introduces some villains who have long histories and complex backstories and motivations…
…or do they? After the New 52 reboot, it’s been difficult to know how much of any given character’s backstory has remained intact — doubly so for villains who generally haven’t had a monthly title to hash all that out. And if some of these guys remember the bad old days…what does that mean for the larger DC Universe?
You can check out some preview art, some comments on the match-ups fans can expect to see when the League and the Squad fight, and more in the video above. It’s pretty clear that the interview was recorded some time ago, though, becuase it seems as though he’s tiptoeing around talking about the introduction of Killer Frost.
Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #1 hits stores next week, and continues weekly until January 25.
