Spoilers ahead for this week's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, titled "Leviathan."

After thirteen episodes, the team finally had their best chance yet to take down Vandal Savage in tonight's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow...and didn't.

That's likely to infuriate many fans who found themselves screaming at their televisions earlier tonight, but showrunner Phil Klemmer teased that it's in furtherance of a larger story that will play out over the next three weeks.

"I think people will come away from this, when Savage isn't killed even though our team had the chance, I think they will be hopefully surprised and yet they'll understand why we didn't do what we set out to do," Klemmer said during an interview before the episode aired. "It makes for a really interesting sort of dynamic as we head into the last three because we have Savage on board the Waverider heading into fourteen and the thing that we always said we wanted to do, we chose not to do. I think allowing a guy like Vandal Savage to live a minute longer is always a dangerous proposition, and ultimately it will come back to haunt us, the fact that we had the chance to kill him and didn't. It will really come back to wreak havoc with our team and the world."

DC's Legends of Tomorrow airs on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
