Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been involved with the project almost since its inception, having been given the choice of playing either Captain Marvel AKA Shazam or his archenemy Black Adam. Johnson eventually chose the latter, and word soon spread that Black Adam would get his own feature film.

Now we’re learning that the upcoming Shazam! film will not feature Johnson’s Black Adam in any capacity.

Umberto Gonzalez AKA El Mayimbe first broke the news that Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out director David F. Sandberg would helm the magical DC Comics-based film. While it was unclear at the time, he has since confirmed that Johnson will not be playing Black Adam in the movie.

Johnson has a busy slate for the foreseeable future, including a movie based on the Rampage video game followed by the Jungle Cruise project from Disney. No word has come whether he’s severed ties with the project completely or whether they’re saving the inevitable confrontation between the characters for another film.

Captain Marvel and Black Adam are both based on the Fawcett Comics characters created by C. C. Beck, Bill Parker, and Otto Binder.

Maybe we’ll get some clarity on WB’s plans for their DC Comics movie universe during their Hall H panel this week at San Diego Comic-Con.

There’s no official synopsis for Shazam! or Black Adam, but here’s what Johnson had to say about the latter project over on Instagram:

“One of the most powerful anti-heroes on the planet is coming. And he is coming in hot. Brace yourself for BLACK ADAM! It’s a new dawn.

“Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for for a very long time. Hope, optimism & FUN. Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe.”
