Warning: Spoilers ahead for tonight’s midseason finale of Arrow, titled “What We Leave Behind.”

As you know if you watched the episode or read our recap tonight, Oliver returns to the Arrowcave at the end of the episode to discover someone unexpected is waiting for him there — Laurel Lance, who died last season.

“Obviously people don’t just come back from the dead, so there has to be some sort of vetting process to make sure that it is Laurel because the group has seen some peculiar things,” Amell told his Facebook followers in the video embedded below. “We delve into that when we come back in the New Year.”

Amell said that tonight’s script was the first in a longtime that legitimately shocked him when he turned the page to that reveal. He also said that he was skeptical at first of the idea of bringing another character back from the dead, but that they’re now several episodes down the line in production and that he thinks the story that comes out of it is a good one.

When a fan opined that he hoped it was real, and that it would be nice to have Black Canary back on the show, Amell agreed.

“[There is] lots of consternation in the fan base about what’s important — the Black Canary in the Green Arrow-verse,” Amell said. “I will say that forgetting about the show for a second if you look at the canon of Green Arrow, John Diggle wasn’t a character and he’s indispensible. Felicity Smoak wasn’t really a character and she’s indispensible. So we picked and plucked from various parts of the DC Universe, but if you’re just getting into the canon of Green Arrow the comic book character, the Black Canary is easily the most important feature next to the Green Arrow, period, full-stop, forever. So it would be nice to have the Black Canary back.”

PROMETHEUS MAKES A DEADLY MOVE AGAINST OLIVER AND THE TEAM — After Prometheus attacks Curtis (Echo Kellum), Oliver (Stephen Amell) realizes Prometheus knows all of Team Arrow’s secret identities and is planning to come for them one by one. Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Detective Malone (guest star Tyler Ritter) discover a clue that links Prometheus to Oliver’s past.

Antonio Negret directed the episode written by Wendy Mericle & Beth Schwartz.

Arrow airs on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. New episodes return on January 25, 2017.
