Suicide Squad Rotten

Suicide Squad doesn't hit theaters until August 5th, but press reviews are already starting to roll in. While opinions remain divided, the early reviews have taken their toll in regards to the film's fresh rating on review score aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Suicide Squad is currently sitting at a rotten rating of 37%, with 26 unfavorable reviews out of 41 total. That isn't a huge sample size, but I'm sure it's not what the studio wanted either. Still, it is higher than Warner Bros. previous effort, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is currently sitting at a 27% rating amongst critics. While the critical score is low, the audience score is significantly higher, with a 65%. I can see the same thing happening with Suicide Squad.

Most of the critiques are centered around the plot, while the praise comes mostly for the film's cast.

"It goes for subversive, funny and stylish, and it succeeds wildly during the first act. But then... It plods on, checking off boxes on a list of cliched moments and meaningless plot points, making you wonder where all the razzle-dazzle went." Joshua Yehl of IGN Movies.

"It is gleefully nihilistic, and it takes a different approach to what has become a fairly familiar story form at this point, right at the moment when it feels like superhero movies either have to evolve or die." Drew McWeeny HitFix.

"The characters are the ultimate in "squad goals," but they're far more fun than the actual story itself." Katie Walsh Tribune News Service

For the studio, the thought must be that despite early reviews, audiences will still go to the theater to see what all the fuss is about, and to be entertained with some fun personalities and action. You can read what ComicBook.com's Lucas Siegel thought of the film here.
