They say that good guys always win, but that isn't always true, at least not at the box office. Case in point, the assembly of villains known as the Suicide Squad are about the best Superman.
With Friday's box office numbers in, along with estimates for the entire weekend, it is now clear that Suicide Squad will pass Man of Steel at the box office on Saturday, and will most likely pass the $300 million mark by Labor Day.
Man of Steel capped its domestic box office run with $291 million. As of Friday, Suicide Squad has just under $290 million, meaning the leap over Man of Steel is imminent.
Suicide Squad is estimated to end its theatrical run with about $310 million domestic.
Suicide Squad is the third film entry into the DC Extended Universe, a shared universe that started with Man of Steel, though nobody working on Man of Steel knew it at the time. Man of Steel was retroactively made the birthplace of the DCEU when plans for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were put into place, bringing Henry Cavill's Superman back to battle Ben Affleck as the new Batman.
Suicide Squad introduces several of Batman's enemies to the DCEU, including the monstrous Killer Croc, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The film also reveals a new version of the Joker, played by Jared Leto, and was the theatrical debut of the Joker's romantic sidekick Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie.
In Suicide Squad, it feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself? This third installment of the DC Extended Universe is written and directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.
