The end of Supergirl‘s second season was rough for Kara Danvers. She managed to save Earth from the Daxamite invasion, but only by releasing lead into the atmosphere which forced her Daxamite boyfriend Mon-El off planet in a seriously sad twist.

Dealing with that heartbreak is going to be a big part of the third season of The CW‘s series, but star Kara Benoist told CBR that it’s not going to be an easy road for the Kryptonian as she explores who Kara Danvers really is.

“It’s a couple of months past where we left off. When we pick up in season three, Kara has very much dedicated herself to Supergirl, and I don’t think she really wants to address what happened for Kara Danvers personally, because that was such a massive heartbreak for her. So, the balance is a little off-kilter right now, and this season I think we’re really going to explore her identity. She’s really questioning whether she’s human or an alien and which she wants to be,” Benoist said.

The journey to figure out who Kara is a natural progression of the character’s growth. Season two saw Kara trying to find her footing as she went from Cat Grant’s assistant to young reporter under Snapper Carr. Now that Kara has proven herself in her work, she must deal with the emotional impact of what it all means.

“She’s in National City, just really going at every possible crime she could, Benoist continued. “CatCo’s still there, but it’s definitely up in the air and she’s questioning her role as Kara Danvers … I wish she could have had that perfect formula that she felt that she had with her love and her career and being a superhero and juggling all of that.”

Fans will get to see Kara back in action when Supergirl returns Monday, October 9th on The CW.

Ridding National City of Queen Rhea and her Daxamite army was a major win for Supergirl, but one that came at a significant cost, as Kara was forced to sacrifice her budding relationship with Mon-El. When season three returns with all-new supercharged adventures this fall on The CW, Kara and team will come up against a new threat in the form of DC Worldkiller, Reign.
