It sounds like The Flash‘s newest antagonist will pose a threat like never before.

In a recent interview with TVLine, showrunner Todd Helbing teased the arrival of Clifford DeVoe/The Thinker (Neil Sandilands), season four’s much-anticipated Big Bad. As he revealed, DeVoe’s reason for causing trouble are a little more nuanced, as he will be “motivated by something personal that he experienced” rather than previous villains’ quests for world domination.
Helbing also hinted at the “psychological component” of The Thinker’s war against Team Flash, which is already being dubbed ‘The Fastest Man Alive vs. The Fastest Mind Alive.’ According to him, the conflict will be presented in a unique way – with the audience sometimes knowing his plan long before Team Flash does.
“[He’s] literally is the smartest guy on the planet, so there’s a lot of chess pieces that he’s moving around simultaneously.” Hebling added. “As our team is figuring out who he is and what they think the plan is, there’s a lot of fun [as we] show the audience information and then have our team catch up to that information or surpass it. It’s a big mystery.”
This won’t be the only mystery that Team Flash has to handle in the show’s fourth season, with Barry appearing to be significantly changed after his return from the Speed Force. And of course, the entire Arrowverse is set to face an entirely new threat – their evil Earth X counterparts – during Barry and Iris’ upcoming nuptials.
The Flash Season Four premieres Tuesday, October 10 on The CW.
