Cadmus, a quasi-official genetic engineering facility in the DC Universe, has not played a major role in the comics for a number of years, even as the organization became a central antagonist in season 2 of Supergirl. Now, though, it looks like Cadmus is back — and perhaps in a more familiar form.

The Dark Days comics from Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, and the forthcoming Metal event they feed into, seem to be bringing back quite a few familiar faces from DC’s past, and reinventing some others.
One such returning guest? Dubbilex, the “DNAlien” who served as Cadmus’s resident telepath for years, palled around with Jimmy Olsen, The Guardian, and Superman…and eventually became the most recognizable face at the Cadmus Project.
During his time at Cadmus, Dubbilex was one of those “beautiful on the inside” characters who was often asked to do questionable things, but found a way to rise above them (at least in the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths take that was seen most recently). He often came into conflict with management at the Project, and sometimes found himself siding with Superman — either silently or openly — when disagreements happened.
Besides his fairly standard role inside of the Cadmus Project, Dubbilex became a fan-favorite when Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett took him to Hawaii to be Superboy’s official custodian when the character got his own solo series.
Dubbilex, a gray-skinned alien with small yellow horns on his head, has been largely absent since a few years before the Flashpoint reboot in 2011 (aside from a couple of appearances in the New 52 version of OMAC), but appears in preview art for Dark Days: The Casting #1 from artist John Romita, Jr.
You can check out the panel above, and preview pages from Dark Days: The Forge and Dark Days: The Casting in the attached image gallery.
Dark Days: The Casting sees The Joker’s surprise attack threaten to lay waste to all of Batman’s carefully laid plans. Will the Dark Knight be able to regain the trust of his closest allies, Green Lantern and Duke, and prevent the forces of darkness from consuming the DC Universe?! Will Hawkman’s warning stop our heroes from peering into the abyss?
The great comics event of summer 2017 is on its way, courtesy of superstar writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by a master class of comics artists: Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr.!
