Based on Friday box office reports, Variety confirms that Wonder Woman has now officially passed the $609.8 million record for a live-action film from a female director, a record previously held by Phyllida Lloyd with Mamma Mia! Making the feat even more impressive is that this record has been set in just three weeks after the film’s release.

Patty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman, which has become a pivotal film in the world of not just superhero movies, but in the world filmmaking in general. The director’s last film, Monster, earned lead actress Charlize Theron an Academy Award, but Jenkins still had to wait 14 years to direct her next film. Even more surprising, given the film’s success, is that Jenkins was only hired when the film’s original director, Michelle MacLaren, left the project.

The DC Extended Universe has had fans worried, as reviews have gotten worse with each installment, beginning with Man of Steel in 2013, which sits at 55% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, and dropped to 25% with last summer’s Suicide Squad. The box office returns on the films have all been phenomenal, but Wonder Woman is on track to be the franchise’s most successful film, as well as the most well-received, sitting at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wonder Woman‘s success not only bodes well for the franchise, but for female-fronted comic book films, as many fans have been clamoring to see a film based on Marvel’s Black Widow character for years, as well as for female directors in the genre, which has notoriously been a boys’ club.
