Wonder Woman Slays The Mummy At The Box Office

Even the undead might of The Mummy proved no match for DC’s Amazon princess. Wonder Woman remains on top of the box office for the second weekend in a row.

Wonder Woman earned $16 million from 4,165 locations on Friday. The film is expected to earn $53 by the time the weekend is through, bringing its box office total to $200 million.

Universal Pictures’ Dark Universe is off to a rocky start. The Mummy, which is intended to be the monster movie universe’s equivalent of Iron Man or Man of Steel, brought in just $12 million from 4,035 locations on Friday, even with the star power of Tom Cruise. The film is expected to earn just over $30 million over its opening weekend.

Animated superhero movie Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie drops from second to third place in its second week at the box office. The film earned $3.5 million on Friday from 3,529 locations and is expected to bring in a total of $13 million over the weekend. The film’s total will stand at just over $44 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sinks down to fourth place. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie earned $3 million from 3,679 locations on Friday and is expected to earn $10.5 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to over $135 million.

Rounding out the top five this week is newcomer It Comes At Night. The latest horror movie from A24 earned $2.5 million on Friday alone. That’s more than its budget of $2.4 million. The film is expected to earn $6.5 million through the weekend.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 finally slips out of the box office top five, landing at the number six spot. Baywatch also slides out to number seven, and Alien: Covenant falls to number nine.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.

2. The Mummy

Nick Morton is a soldier of fortune who plunders ancient sites for timeless artifacts and sells them to the highest bidder. When Nick and his partner come under attack in the Middle East, the ensuing battle accidentally unearths Ahmanet, a betrayed Egyptian princess who was entombed under the desert for thousands of years. With her powers constantly evolving, Morton must now stop the resurrected monster as she embarks on a furious rampage through the streets of London.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie and Dylan Kussman from a story by Kurtzman, Jon Spaihts and Jenny Lumet. The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe.

3. Captain Underpants

George Beard and Harold Hutchins are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a treehouse creating comic books. When their mean principal threatens to separate them into different classes, the mischievous boys accidentally hypnotize him into thinking that he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British Navy.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the franchise inspired by the Disney Parks ride and is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer. Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Hector Barbossa, respectively. New Pirates of the Caribbean stars include Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also features the returns of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively after they both skipped Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous order a man (Joel Edgerton) has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within the man as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.

It Comes at Night was written and directed by Trey Edward Shults and stars Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Riley Keough.
