Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is shaping up to be a much darker Pokemon game than past installments of the popular game franchise.

The Pokemon Company just released a new trailer for the upcoming Pokemon games in Japan, which shows off a couple of new characters and hints at an epic new storyline. While the game is set in the Alola region and features many of the same characters as Pokemon Sun and Moon, the new trailer makes clear that this is an entirely different game with what appears to be a much darker plotline.
While we still don’t know a lot about Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we can pull out a few clues from the new trailer. Here’s a look at some the big takeaways from the new trailer:
The Ultra Beasts are Coming
As if we hadn’t figured it out already, the Ultra Beasts will be front and center in the new Pokemon game.
The Ultra Beasts are extradimensionalย creatures that broke through to the Pokemon world via actual holes in reality. Necrozma, the Legendary Pokemon at the center ofย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, was supposedly an Ultra Beast stranded on Earth in the distant past, butย Pokemon Sun and Moonย didn’t really follow up on that bit of mythology.ย
While the Ultra Beasts played a big role in Pokemon Sun and Moon, playersย didn’t get a chance to battle them until after they had beaten the rest of the game. However, it looks like the Ultra Beasts will be invadingย the Alolaย region a lot sooner inย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon…or at least we’ll get a chance to see more of their rampage through the region.ย
In one brief clip, we see Guzzlordย appear in the Ruins of Abundance, confronting the Island Kahunaย Nanu. We also see Xurkitreeย and the two new Ultra Beasts (code named Burst and Assembly) burst into the Alolaย region as well.ย
PokeRiding…Legendary Pokemon?!
It looks as if players will get to ride a Legendary Pokemon for a second consecutive generation. Two brief clips appeared to show the player character riding Solgaleo and Lunalaย through some sort of interdimensionalย tunnel. The player was dressed in what appeared to be a modifiedย PokeRideย outfit, perhaps so the player can withstand the hostile Ultra Space environment.
We already knew thatย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moonย was going to introduce new PokeRideย systems, but we weren’t expecting to see Solgaleoย and Lunalaย as Ride Pokemon! We’ll have to see how the Legendary Pokemon are used and whether it’s just a onetime feature or something that players can access over and over.ย
Who is Zionira?
Aย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moonย poster teased several mysterious new characters in armor. We got our first uninterrupted look at those characters, one of whom is named (at least in the Japanese version) Zionera.ย
It appears that, judging from the symbol on his arm, that Zioneraย is part of a new organization.ย We don’t know if he’s working on his own or collaborating with Team Skull and the Aetherย Foundation, butย he seems to know a lot aboutย Necrozma. In the trailer,ย Zioniraย briefly mentioned how Necrozmaย impacted the Alolaย region, but they didn’t give much context to his trailer.
It’s possible that Zioneraย will replace Guzma and Lusamine as the primary antagonists of the new games, or he could be some sort of neutral party. We’ll have to find out whenย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moonย comes out in November!ย
