Bethesda Hints at Unannounced Game Coming This Year, Quickly Covers It Up

Is Bethesda working on a secret project due to launch this year? That’s what reports are indicating this morning, but you may want to hold your horses. We’re getting some conflicting information, and it’s worth taking a moment to weigh all of the evidence before assuming that, I don’t know, Fallout 4 is headed to the Nintendo Switch or something. I hope that it is (I’d actually be happier with a Fallout 3 remaster), but this could have been an honest slip of the tongue. Let’s begin with the damning comment from Bethesda’s VP of Marketing Pete Hines:

This little comment sent the internet, forums, and message boards ablaze with speculation. What could the new game be, and when will it be revealed? Hines indicated that we wouldn’t have long to wait, so maybe this is something we could see at the Tokyo Game Show this month, or else at the PlayStation experience?

Of course, it didn’t take long for Hines to backpedal a bit, and take back what he said. Check out his follow-up comment:

“I probably… was rambling. Ignore.”

Attempting to put a lid on the newly opened can of worms, Pete Hines chimed in on Twitter to try and calm everyone down — or to try to at least get everyone to stop talking about it:

“I probably just had a concussion from the beating I took online and was rambling. Ignore.” Hmm. We’re not sure if we buy that, Pete. It sounds like you may have just spoken a little too soon, and you’re trying to play the whole thing down. It’s okay, though. We don’t think you revealed too much. In fact, we think you should keep talking! What’s in the box?!

There’s a chance that Hines did let something slip, but he let the wrong thing slip. It’s possible that a new game will be revealed, this year, but not launched. There’s also a chance that when he said “this year,” he meant this fiscal year, which means the game could launch any time between now and March 2018.

Could it be Game of Thrones?

It’s also worth noting that, a while back,ย Game of Thrones fans were going nuts over a Target listing for something called “Bethesda: Game of Thrones” was listed on its website. That Target listing was the first, last, and only mention of aย Game of Thrones project from Bethesda, and it has since disappeared. After report of the listing spread like wildfire, Target reached out to us to officially state that the product did not exist, and promptly apologized for the confusion.ย

Target is hoping that we’ve all forgotten about that listing, but we didn’t. Is that listing and Pete Hines’ comment connected in some way?

Hopefully we’ll get some clarification soon — or a big announcement! In the meantime, what are you hoping for?

What game are you hoping to see revealed?
