Square Enix already had enough success for early 2017 with Final Fantasy XV, but now another big role-playing adventure has arrived with Dragon Quest XI, which made its way to Japan for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 last month.

While we wait (patiently) for the U.S. version to make its arrival sometime next year, the game is already making big waves overseas, as sales reports indicate that the sequel has already gotten off on the right foot.
Japanese publication Famitsu is reporting that, within the first two days of the game release, it’s already managed to sell over two million copies. Nearly half of those units are coming from the PlayStation 4, but, for the time being, the 3DS version is the definitive leader thus far. And the numbers should continue to grow over the month, with the potential for Dragon Quest XI to sell even more millions of copies.
This could be a nice turnaround for the series. According to PlayStation Lifestyle, the last game to boast impressive sales numbers was the previously released Dragon Quest IX, which managed to sell just over 4.3 million copies in its entirety. There’s no doubt Dragon Quest XI will eclipse that easily, mainly due to an elaborate marketing campaign and big-time hype going into its release.
And, as we previously mentioned, it’ll be making its way to the U.S. as well, though it will obviously take some time to translate. There’s also a question of which platform versions will end up here, though the 3DS and PlayStation 4 editions are probably givens. (There’s talk of a Switch version as well, but that’s still up in the air at the moment.) Whatever the case, Square Enix looks to have a colossal hit on its hands that could sell a couple more million copies โ or higher โ once it hits our shores. And that will continue adding to the overall success of Dragon Quest in the long run.
For now, congrats to Square Enix on setting big sales records with Dragon Quest XIโฆbut that isn’t likely to quell our excitement for whenever the U.S. release gets here.
Dragon Quest XI is available now (in Japan) for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4.
