EA Is Also Relieved After Red Dead Redemption 2's Delay

Players might not be too happy with Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 having its release date delayed, but a couple of other big-name gaming companies aren't too upset at the news. Electronic Arts recently gave their quarterly earnings report, and during the discussions, the CFO Blake Jorgensen said that the game's delay wasn't bad news for them at all.

Just to be clear, EA isn't saying that it's scared of Rockstar's highly-anticipated sequel to the first Red Dead Redemption. If anything, they're excited about the possibilities that massive games such as these create for everyone within the gaming industry. Bigger games drive sales for both the game and the consoles and help everyone out in the long run, but not having to compete with such a wanted game while trying to release their own big-name titles is certainly something that they won't be objected to.

"What we've found historically, we've had many times where we've gone into quarters that looked daunting because of the competition," Jorgensen said. "Think back to [Grand Theft Auto V] when it came out, and what we actually found is it grows the overall market. It drives console sales. Oftentimes, many of those titles get bundled to help drive or reduce the price of a console for the consumer, and it drives excitement in the marketplace, and we like that. It benefits the consumer and it benefits us because it generates a lot of buzz around games."

Jorgensen went on to say that competing against these other games is nothing new to EA, and the chance to share the market with big games like Red Dead is more exciting than it is imposing.

EA isn't the only company to comment on the delay of Red Dead Redemption 2, the first being Ubisoft who was straightforward with what the delay meant to them. According to the CFO for Ubisoft, the delay meant only good news for them since it meant that other titles like South Park: The Fractured but Whole and Assassin's Creed Origins wouldn't be competing with the Rockstar game that people have been waiting on for some time now.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now scheduled for a release date in early 2018.
