Final Fantasy 7 has been around long enough for detailed fan theories to be created as players pick apart content for any evidence that might tell something unexpected about Gaia and the characters living in its world. Now, with the remake trilogy, there’s a chance that fan theories that have been around since the release of the original FF7 could be made into a canon part of the game. In general, there aren’t a ton of theories about various summons in FF7, since you have recurring summons in each Final Fantasy game. However, FF7 introduces a new summon, which is the Knights of the Round.

Knights of the Round is the strongest summon you can get in Final Fantasy 7, although it hasn’t been part of the remake trilogy yet, as you won’t reach Round Island to pick it up until the third part of the trilogy. While the original summon was just a reference to the Knight of the Round Table from the story of King Arthur, developers seem to be considering giving this summon more of a connection to the in-game world in the remake.
The Knights of the Round Could Be Ancient Cetra

Aerith is now the only remaining Cetra on the planet, but in the distant past, the Cetra had their own civilization and were thriving. Of course, the event that would lead to the end of the Cetra started with the arrival of Jenova, which they called the “calamity from the skies,” a title that rings incredibly true when you look at the history of Gaia. According to a popular fan theory, Jenova’s arrival would lead to the creation of the Knights of the Round Materia, which allows you to use the Knights of the Round summon.
The theory is that the knights who are part of the Knights of the Round summon are the ancient Cetra warriors who sealed away Jenova in the Northern Crater, where she’d remain until Shinra found her and mistakenly assumed she was a Cetra. In this theory, the Knights of the Round essentially decided to create a materia that could summon them again in the event that Jenova would be unsealed and the planet was threatened by her once again.
When it comes to this theory, there’s very little evidence to work with to even develop it in the first place. The only hint is that using Knights of the Round on Jenova-SYNTHESIS will result in that boss being killed in just this one attack. However, using Knights of the Round on this boss will then increase the health for the final boss, Safer Sephiroth. The way this summon interacts with these specific bosses is so unusual that it was enough to spawn an entire theory about the knights being connected to Jenova in some way, which is how you end up with the theory that they were the Cetra who originally sealed her, returning to help save the planet by defeating her once more.
This Would Fit with the Current Remake Lore

Considering how little evidence there is for the Knights of the Round theory in the first place, it wouldn’t be difficult for the developers to decide to make this a canon piece of FF7’s lore in the final part of the remake. Even a detail as small as additional text on the materia about the knights being Cetra would be enough to turn this popular theory into a piece of canon lore. Still, it would be nice to have more than some text and instead see a cutscene or something used if the developers decide to include the theory.
Both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have made changes to the story of the original game, which makes the trilogy appear to be more like a reimagining of the original or a sequel to it, especially since there are moments in the remake where it appears like Aerith and Sephiroth know the events of the original game. Compared to a lot of the shifts that the remake trilogy is already making, having the Knights of the Round summon theory become canon would be a tiny detail in the grand scheme of things, but one that would add a new layer of depth to this summon and the story of Jenova being sealed.
