Final Fantasy XV is a total brofest, which isn’t automatically a bad thing, but it does fly in the face of the series’ commitment to memorable female characters. Long before the rest of the video game industry wised up, Square Enix was putting powerful women in starring roles, so it’s kind of disappointing to see them largely left out of the fun in Final Fantasy XV.

It seems Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata agrees, telling Polygon he has “incredible motivation” to make future DLC featuring the game’s main female protagonist, Lunafreya:
“I really do have that desire to depict Lunafreya as an even stronger female personality. Obviously our first mission is to get ‘Episode Ignis’ out. Then when we will decide what we do with [Final Fantasy XV] together with the fans and community. [If the] first priority you want to see [in future DLC] is Luna? That’s something that I can agree with as well. I’ve also got incredible motivation to do that.”
Back in May Square Enix asked fans what kind of additional DLC they’d like to see for Final Fantasy XV, with the poll including options for new character-focused episodes starring Cor, Aranea, Iris, Lunafreya, and Gentiana. It should be noted that four of those five names are female characters, so it definitely seems like the ladies will get their turn to join the adventure eventually. I might choose the badass Aranea over Luna, but that’s just me.
Final Fantasy XV‘s next big chunk of DLC, Episode Ignis, arrives this December. Square Enix has promised more add-ons will follow in 2018.
Final Fantasy XV is currently available for PC and PS4. You can check out WWG’s coverage of the game here.
