A lot of old-schoolers grew up in the 8-bit style of gaming, not getting enough of the NES and Master System games back in “the day”. So then, it makes sense for Funko to introduce a new line-up of Pop! figurines that celebrate this 8-bit legacy, right?

And so it begins. The company has announced that it will produce a line-up of the figures based on 8-bit style blocky designs, with a four-pack headed to New York Comic-Con this week. This includes 8-bit style iterations of the classic Bandai Namco arcade character Dig-Dug, as well as a stylish take on Batman, and two foes from the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series – Shredder and the Foot Soldier.
Here are the details straight from the company’s blog page:
“Pop! 8-Bit will focus on 80s and 80s-inspired licenses in order to showcase familiar figures in a new format without sacrificing its nostalgic sensibilities. ‘We are so excited with the look and feel of all of our first attempts at this 8-bit approach,’ says Ben Butcher, Funko’s Vice President of Creative. ‘So many of our licenses have had some sort of vintage video game at one point or another that it allows us to produce a broad and varied line.’”
The company will introduce these first toys in just a few days, and the series “shows no signs of slowing down in the future with more figures coming from some of your favorite TV and Netflix shows set in the 80’s!” according to the company. That said, we could also be seeing more favorites from the old-school gaming era as well. With Bandai Namco on board, it’s very possible we could be seeing a line-up of Pac-Man toys, including Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and the respective ghosts from their series. (That’s just speculation, though.)
So if you’re headed to New York Comic Con this weekend, make sure you pick up these awesome little Funko figurines to your collection. And fingers crossed we’ll see more Dig-Dug ones as well – Pooka and Fygar would be pretty ideal for our desks, now that we think about it.
