The first wave of reviews for Ghost of Yotei are in, and the response has been nothing short of glowing. Sony’s latest first-party title has a Metacritic score of 87, officially surpassing that of Ghost of Tsushima. While the first game in the series earned an impressive 83, it has now been edged out by its successor. Right now, that 87 score puts it in 14th place for highest-rated games of the year, just above Silent Hill f — another major game and long-awaited follow-up — which releases one week ahead of Yotei.

Ghost of Yotei marks the last major PlayStation 5 title and exclusive for the year, so expectations were high. Ghost of Tsushima sold millions of copies and established a new fan-favorite franchise for Sony. With these scores, Ghost of Yotei has given Sony and Sucker Punch a huge win and the perfect way to close out the year.

Reviews speak highly of Ghost of Yotei’s pacing, atmosphere, and emotional weight. The narrative is receiving much praise, showing the fear that the Tsushima sequel would fail because it was a sequel and its revenge plot were unfounded. Additionally, the breathtaking visuals and combat have earned high marks, with many reviewers placing them above Ghost of Tsushima — which is to be expected given the development time between installments, and this sequel released on a newer console generation.

There are mixed reviews that feel some of the game’s elements are outdated, such as climbing and its checklist open world. Others felt the revenge plot was predictable and overdone in recent years, especially considering how similar Assassin’s Creed Shadows narrative is. These reviews never stray into negative, mostly giving Ghost of Yotei average scores.

2025 has been filled to the brim with potential Game of the Year contendors. Ghost of Yotei joins titles like Hades 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (another PS5 exclusive), and so many more. Only time will tell which of thes games claim the prize, but regardless of whether it wins, Ghost of Yotei promises to be an exciting adventure for PlayStation fans.
