“Sidebar Games is excited to announce Golf Story for Nintendo Switch. Play the story of a golfer, forced to give up all that he holds dear for one final shot at accomplishing his dream. But all is not so simple in the world of golf. To best today’s players you have to be able to keep up with them not just on the course, but also off it.”
Did you see that trailer? Did you see those charming towns and environments? Are you looking at all of these colorful characters we get to interact with? This is giving us some serious Mario Golf vibes from the Game Boy Color days, and that’s pretty much the highest praise I can give this game without knowing more about it. We can’t wait to see more actual gameplay, but Sidebar did give us a few base details:
Tee up anywhere! You’ll be surprised by how many problems can be solved by hitting a golf ball at them.
Explore 8 unique environments, each with their own courses, towns, people and secrets.
Play through a dramatic story with a diverse cast of characters.
Upgrade your golfer by completing challenges, solving puzzles and buying new equipment.
Round out your skill set with long driver tournaments, disc golf, mini golf and wee links. Then go beyond golf with extra challenges like races, mowing, drone flights and geocaching.
If you guys never had the opportunity to play Mario Golf growing up, you have no idea what you’re missing out on. I don’t play golf, and Hot Shots Golf is the only golf game series I’ve ever been into, but I sunk countless hours into Mario Golf because it had the perfect balance of arcade golf gameplay and light RPG elements. It was utterly addicting leveling up your toon, boosting your stats, using new clubs and balls, and seeing your golf game get better with time. It also didn’t hurt that the courses were very thoughtfully laid out.
This is going to be a huge win on the Nintendo Switch, and we’re going to be playing this thing everywhere in handheld mode. Stay tuned to WWG for more on Golf Story — we’re already a bit obsessed with this one.
