Those who play League of Legends know that the game is totally free-to-play, but those players who have been around for a couple of seasons will likely have a laugh or two about the statement, even if it is technically true. That's because no matter how free the game may be, it's hard to resist the temptation of buying something with Riot Points through the in-game store.

The option to check your stats and money spent has been around for awhile, but many players new and old still don't know about the function, though some players might prefer not to know how much money they've spent on League. Whether you need an IP boost, an extra rune page, or there's a new skin out that you just have to have for your main, there's something for just about everyone to purchase in League of Legends. It's all cosmetic and won't affect your gameplay — though some players might argue that skins such as iBlitzcrank and Elementalist Lux definitely lean more towards pay-to-win — but that doesn't make the prospect of rewarding yourself for ranking up any less attractive.

Polls pop up every now and then on Reddit and through the League boards, and another thread similar to these polls was created just a day ago to see how much money players routinely spend on League.

The most recent poll didn't get a great deal of traction and didn't have a currency attached to each number, but it's pretty telling that the highest voted spending bracket is over 1,000 of whatever currency the players are using.

But as always, the real information is gained from first-hand accounts in the comments where players defended their spending. Sometimes, the lofty spending amounts are accumulated over several accounts that players might have, a detail that might help players feel a bit better about their spending. Others claim that spending money this way actually saves them money since they'd otherwise be spending more on console releases. One user pointed out that by not spending $60 on every new console release and instead funneling about $300 into League, it's not as great of an amount compared to buying multiple console games a year.

Check out how much money you've spent so far and other stats for your account by navigating to League's privacy page and signing into your account — just be prepared for what you might see.
