While we enjoyed what Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite had to offer when it arrived last month (mainly due to the awesome fighting engine and the bonkers single-player story), there were some players who insisted that Capcom cut corners when it came to the development of the game, not capturing the richness from the previously released Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. But that may not have been the fault of the development team.

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, a YouTube user by the name of Liam Robertson, who goes under the handle “Game History Guy”, talked to Capcom employees to get a little more detail about Infinite‘s development โ€“ and he found some startling information.

Apparently the budget for the game was low โ€“ even lower than most of Capcom’s other projects. The budget was only slightly more than half of what was put into Street Fighter V‘s downloadable content, which indicates just how much the developers had to work with. That’s not even accounting for the budget of the full game, but rather its DLC.

While specific budget values weren’t given, it appears that put a lot of restraint under the team, which, as a result, may have led to the snafus with character design, like the early complaints that came from the redesigns for Dante and Chun-Li.

So the game was actually put together with pre-existing assets, mainly from the previously released Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and there were little changes as a result.

What’s more, Capcom reportedly made the business decision to sell the extra characters in the game as DLC. Apparently, at one point, Black Panther and Monster Hunter were actually finished and part of the original cast, but then were locked away behind the DLC, which also includes Black Widow, the Winter Soldier, Sigma and Venom.

The full video breaking down Robertson’s investigation can be found above. Now, Capcom hasn’t commented on the matter, so take it with a grain of salt. But considering some of the complaints from fansโ€ฆit’s hard to tell what really happened. The video is definitely worth a watch.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
