For God of War fans who enjoyed using magical effects and items alongside their deadly weapons to pick apart enemies in previous games, you’ll be pleased to hear that magic is most definitely making a return in the new God of War game. Previous God of War games often used special relics or other catalysts for the use of magic, but the new PlayStation 4 exclusive will introduce a couple of different ways to use magic.
During the podcast, Cory Barlog, the director for God of War, spoke about some of the magical methods players will encounter. One of the types of magic that’ll be encountered was referred to as “earthy,” a type of magic that’s supposed to fit in with the Nordic theme of the new God of War game. The magic will often involve touching the ground and invoking ancient powers to assist you in battles.
But in addition to using the earthly magic, the spoken word in God of War also plays an integral part in magical abilities. All of the magic that’s used will involve some type of language being utilized while also making use of special magical runes.
Outside of magic, the language of the game also plays an integral part to the story when it comes to understanding the new setting and the storyline. Elder Futhark is the base language that exists in God of War, but it was revealed in the podcast that there are nine different realms in the frigid region and each one will have its own variation of the language. By translating runes and parts of the language, Kratos and his son can learn more about the language that’ll assist them with magic and making decisions throughout the game.
