A new Nintendo Switch 2 update has some good news for Pokemon fans, and especially those who grew up with the Nintendo DS era of Pokemon. As you may know, since the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 last summer, the console has struggled with its backward compatibility support. Quite frankly, Nintendo didn’t do its due diligence to make sure games actually work as they are supposed to. This includes its own games.

To this end, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl — two Nintendo Switch games — have not worked well with the Switch 2 since the console’s launch, suffering from crashing issues. Now, many months later, Nintendo claims a recent Nintendo Switch 2 update has fixed this issue for these Nintendo Switch games specifically. It remains unclear what was wrong and what took so long to fix the problem. There are plenty of other examples, though, of the Switch 2 having backward compatibility issues with its predecessor.
Classic DS Pokemon Games
For those who do not know, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were released in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch as remakes of 2006’s Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, a pair of Nintendo DS exclusive games. Upon release, the remakes earned a 73 on Metacritic, considerably lower than the 85 the originals posted. This didn’t stop them from selling gangbusters, though. As of 2022, the pair has combined for 15 million copies sold.
It is worth noting that the crashing issues were not universal, so some Nintendo Switch 2 users may not have experienced any issues playing these Pokemon games, but they were fairly common, and common enough that Nintendo went out of its way to fix the problem.
