Nintendo is taking over, and it’s doing it in a hurry! Last month Nintendo hardware dominated the sales charts, and this morning Nintendo is reporting that its products made up two-thirds of the entirety of September’s hardware sales. This is taking all of Nintendo’s hardware into account, of course, but the NPD Group also tracked the Nintendo Switch as the best selling current-gen console of the month. That makes three months in a row that the Nintendo Switch has topped the charts, and fifth time overall since its launch in March.

A press release this morning wasn’t shy about Nintendo’s games either, which have also been performing. “Nintendo Switch games again occupied multiple spots in the list of best-selling individual games of the month, including Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle from Ubisoft at No. 7, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at No. 10 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 11. Also, the Metroid: Samus Returnsgame for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems debuted at No. 8.” It’s no secret that Switch and 3DS owners have been drowning in great games recently, and that’s a great problem to have.
Indeed, the waters will only continue to rise in coming months. At the moment we greatly look forward to the launch of Fire Emblem Warriors and Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch, and soon we’ll also have DOOM, Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon to look forward to.
Nintendo is on track to be the dominant player this holiday season. Microsoft has gone on record stating that the Xbox One X is “not for everyone” in a play to sell it as something meant exclusively for gamers who are interested in the best, but a lack of can’t-miss first-party games will likely cripple sales at launch. No doubt Sony will see a strong surge in PS4 and PS4 Pro sales, especially with Black Friday deals, but Sony’s momentum is beginning to even out as Nintendo continues to lay on the pedal.
It’s going to be an explosive holiday season, folks. Buckle up!
