PlayStation Plus is not required to take your PS4 online and access the PSN shop, and some weekends you’ll find that certain games will allow you to play online without a Plus subscription, but for the most part, you’re going ot need PlayStation Plus in order to play the most popular games online with friends.

And while you’re able to access the PSN store without a Plus subscription, if you plan to buy any games digitally it would behoove you to make sure that your PlayStation Plus membership is current. PS Plus members regularly get additional discounts whenever sales come around that non-plus members never see. There are flash sales pretty much ever weekend, and themed sales every week. The savings there are good, but with PlayStation Plus, they’re great. Did we mention the free games?

Every month, PlayStation Plus members get a selection of full games for free. PS Plus members will see multiple games across all PlayStation platforms — PS4, PS3, and PS Vita — offered up free of charge on the first Tuesday of the month, and you’ll have all month to download them. A brand new set of free PS Plus games drops next week, so now is the perfect time to get your subscription squared away!
