Nintendo is all about the Super Nintendo nostalgia this year – pre-orders for the SNES Classic edition just went up (and, of course, sold out within minutes), but thankfully there’s another option for folks who want to bring back those warm, fuzzy early-90s feelings.

Sadly, the SNES New 3DS XL is a European exclusive, and it’s likely to stay that way. Nintendo previously released a Japanese Super Famicom edition of the New 3DS XL, making this essentially a re-used design (the European SNES was more-or-less identical to the Super Famicom). Of course, the American SNES had a unique boxy purple-and-grey look, so doing a SNES 3DS here would require a totally new design. Maybe Nintendo will go ahead and do that, but I have my doubts.
But hey, if you’re European this is actually a pretty good alternative to the SNES Classic Edition. It isn’t just about the system’s looks – the New Nintendo 3DS XL can play SNES games (unlike the basic model 3DS). Here’s the full list of SNES classics available through the New 3DS Virtual Console.
- F-Zero
- Pilotwings
- Super Mario World
- Donkey Kong Country
- EarthBound
- Super Mario Kart
- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Super Metroid Nintendo
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
- Mega Man 7
- Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts Capcom
- The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
- Final Fight
- Kirby’s Dream Course
- Mega Man X
- Street Fighter Alpha 2
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
- Super Castlevania IV
- Final Fight 2
- Final Fight 3
- Mega Man X2
- Breath of Fire
- Mega Man X3
- Breath of Fire II
- Demon’s Crest
- Castlevania: Dracula X
Not a bad lineup – Some of those games aren’t available on the SNES Classic Edition!
The SNES Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL hits European shelves on October 13.
