Nintendo Switch Version Of Sonic Forces Sports Downgraded Visuals, Only Runs At 30fps

Nintendo Switch owners are already very used to being skipped over when it comes multiplatform titles, but, thankfully, the upcoming Sonic Forces will be an exception to the rule. The blue hedgehog’s latest 3D adventure will hit PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch on the same day! Unfortunately, it sounds like Nintendo fans are getting the least appealing version of the bunch.

Sonic Stadium recently went hands-on with the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic Forces, and their report isn’t terribly promising. First, the big one โ€“ Sonic Forces only runs at a sluggish 30fps on the Switch. Considering Sonic games are all about speed and fluid movement, Sonic Forces for Switch not running at 60fps like all the other versions is a pretty big deal.

And the bad news doesn’t end there. In addition to running slower, Sonic Forces reportedly looks noticeably worse on Switch. Here’s how Sonic Stadium describes the situation:

“Texture and models are of lower quality, with certain effects either trimmed down or removed entirely. The lush, wavy grass from the PS4 version of Green Hill is less lush and wavy on the Switch. The shadows cast by Eggman’s ship were distinctly lower resolution, appearing jagged with inconsistent levels of darkness.”

Word is, the game looks nice enough in handheld mode, but its “flaws are very apparent” when docked. Speaking of which, much like Rocket League, Sonic Forces doesn’t seem to provide any visual boost when docked.

Considering Sonic games sell best on Nintendo systems, and Sonic Forces is a relatively simple cartoon platformer, you’d think Sega would be able to find a way to squeeze 60fps out of the Switch. Maybe things will change between now and the game’s launch.

Sonic Forces races onto PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch this fall.
