The Star Wars franchise is as popular as it’s ever been, crushing records at the box office and inspiring sure-to-be-huge games like the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II, but what about TV? Sure, we’ve got fun animated series like Star Wars Rebels, but what about something just a little more mature?

Well, a group of fans are trying to make that happen with a petition for a Netflix series based on Star Wars‘ Old Republic era. For those not up on their lore, the Old Republic era took place around 3,000 years before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, during which the Jedi and Sith had a much more openly-fought, widescale rivalry. The era has primarily been detailed in the video games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, and the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.
The petition for a Star Wars: The Old Republic Netflix series launched late last year, crept past the 135,000 signatures mark in February, and now has nearly 190,000 names attached. It seems likely the petition will cross the 200k mark eventually, which is certainly a big milestone, but will it make a difference? Disney seems to want to tie all their movies and TV series as closely to the original trilogy as possible, so a series that predates Star Wars: A New Hope by millennia seems unlikely.
But don’t let that get you too down! A TV show may be unlikely, but there have been rumors a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game may be in the works. I’m pretty sure we’ll return to a galaxy far, far away and a long time ago, one way or another.
Meanwhile, if you’d like to add your John or Jane Hancock to the Star Wars: The Old Republic Netflix petition, you can do that, right here.
