If you’re one of those people who believes that every Super Smash Bros. — past, present, and future — should play like Super Smash Bros. Melee, we have some really exciting new for you. A talented team of developers has just released Super Smash Bros. Melee HD, which will take Smash Bros. for Wii U, the latest entry, and modify it to play exactly like Melee. This is still a work in progress, but it’s an ambitious one, and a lot of progress has been made. Check out the trailer above.

This project is not related in any way to Project M, so don’t get your hopes up if you’ve been waiting for Project M to make its way to the Wii U. This is a wholly new work by a totally different dev team, and you can try it for yourself right now on Wii U or CEMU. If you want to get this up and running on your Wii U, then you’re obviously going to have to do some minor mod work, which comes with some risks. If you brick your console, don’t come crying to us! Luckily, there are detailed instructions, and all of the files you need, here on Reddit.

We’ve taken a portion of the FAQ and posted below so you guys can get a clearer picture of what the team is trying to accomplish here. We won’t be posting direct links to files and docs for obvious reasons, but they’re readily available on the reddit thread linked above.

Q: Is this supposed to be PM 2?

A: No. This project come from a love of a Melee and has nothing to with PM. While we might share a similar goal of bringing the Melee we love to a newer game, we are not, nor do we want to be, the next PM. This also means that we will not be borrowing concepts that are exclusive to PM, such as Lucario’s Magic Combos, Mario and Dr. Mario being combined, etc. We will however use concepts we like that come from a character’s respective title, such as some of Sonic’s animations from his games (made by us, not the PMDT), as these are not concepts exclusive to the PMDT. We hope this clears up any misconceptions you might have.

Q: Why isn’t the mod called something more original like “Sm4sh Deluxe” or something?

A: We’re content with the title being “Melee HD” since it’s primarily been recreating Melee more than it has added new content. A change could happen at some point in the future, but as of now, it’s Melee HD and it’s going to stay that way for a while.

Note: Also, “Sm4sh Deluxe” isn’t the best name either since Nintendo could very easily make an actual Deluxe version of Sm4sh and such a name could cause legal trouble. So, maybe suggest something better for a future name change if the idea is ever considered.

Q: Will you ever import certain popular Brawl character mods?

A: Our goal is to be primarily original, so we will try to avoid importing as much as possible with special exceptions only existing if a character developer is interested in adding their creation to the Melee HD roster, which would have to be considered by the team first. And even then, it needs to reach a certain level of professionalism, such as is the case with Waluigi made by MK64DS. Nothing that looks too cheap like Goku.”
