Supermassive Games revealed during Sony's E3 conference that they have a new game in the works, a virtual reality horror experience called The Inpatient that confines players in a very eerie-looking sanatorium.

Those familiar with the developer will know that they are also the company who created the interactive survival game Until Dawn, a PlayStation 4 exclusive that was released back in 2015. The game urged multiple playthroughs to be made through the story to seek out different storylines and endings as each character that survived or died could alter the way that the story played out, meaning that it was necessary to play through several times in order to fully see all of the content.

Mentioning Until Dawn in conjunction with this game is important for two reasons: Supermassive already has experience with creating story-driven horror titles, and players who have some experience with Until Dawn will notice that, during the trailer, a picture hanging on the wall shows a building with a sign outside that reads "The Blackwood Pines Sanatorium," one of the main settings that was traversed in Until Dawn.

A description of the game on the official trailer confirms any suspicions that this game might have something to do with Until Dawn, and it actually appears to be a sequel to the game set in a time long before the Sanatorium became run-down and deserted.

"Discover who you are before it's too late in this PS VR exclusive set in the Blackwood Sanatorium, over 60 years prior to the 2016 BAFTA award-winning Until Dawn," the description reads.

One thing that certainly does appear to be different in this game is how alone your character is. In Until Dawn, you had eight friends to surround you and help you out while trying to survive the night, but in The Inpatient, it looks like most everyone you encounter is much more keen on keeping you confined in the sanatorium as opposed to making you well again. Unsettling music, a creepy-looking doctor, it's all present and in your face with the PS VR perspective that the game offers.

The Inpatient will be a PlayStation VR exclusive and will be released during the holiday season of 2017.
