The next character that we’ll be getting on the downloadable roster for Injustice 2 is Mortal Kombat‘s Sub-Zero, and he’ll be making his debut in July. WB Games debuted a new trailer for the warrior today, and he’s as ice cold as you’d expect, with a number of devastating attacks that will leave his enemies, ahem, out cold.

So what exactly did we learn about the character with his reveal today? We’ve broken it down in the attached gallery, and, yep, he definitely isn’t afraid to give you the cold shoulder. (Okay, enough puns, let’s get to the fighting action!)
Heโs Got A Dangerous Arsenal
Ask anyone that’s faced off with Sub-Zero in the past how powerful his moves were in Mortal Kombat, and they’ll probably tell you why he’s one of their favorites. That’s likely to continue in Injustice 2, mainly because he has an arsenal that just won’t quit, whether it’s with a charging attack that knock enemies across the room, aerial attacks that can throw someone off, or, of course, his traditional freezing attacks, which offer a variety of things on both the offensive and defensive front. We’ll go over a few of those moves over the next few pages, but, yeah, he’s definitely a good all-around character.
The Floor Is Ice (Not Lava)
One great thing about Sub-Zero is his excellent range. Not only can he hit you up close with attacks involving sabers and hammers (made out of ice, of course), but he can also throw projectiles that can stop an enemy in their tracks, as well as being able to freeze up the floor. As you can see in the screenshot above, he uses this pretty distant attack to throw off his adversary for a split-second, so he can launch into a jumping attack or something along those lines to land some extra damage. So, yeah, when it comes to Sub-Zero, it wouldn’t hurt to move fast and avoid the deep freeze.
Body Doubles, Anyone?
Sub-Zero can create body doubles out of ice that can serve a number of purposes. For instance, he can build a “shadow snowman” that can stop an enemy and freeze them, either in the ground or in the air, enabling Sub-Zero to launch a counter-attack. He can also set up an offensive front with one, in case ice balls aren’t enough to get the point across. Of course, if you prefer, you can just pick up your ice double and hurl it at an enemy like a projectile, and with its size, it has a pretty sizable chance of hitting them, even if they’re slightly in the air.
Letโs Talk Weapons
Sub-Zero’s ability to create some awesome weaponry is hard to miss. He can create knives that can stab into an enemy up-close (mainly with grab attacks), he can build ice sabers that give him pretty good reach with a nearby enemy, and he can also create an ice hammer, similar in build to Harley Quinn’s mallet, that can do a whopping amount of damage. Best of all, these break away easily, enabling Sub-Zero to use his icy fists to hit an opponent multiple times in a combo. It seems the best weapons to him are the disposable kind, and they just break away.
Jim Leeโs Incredible Design
You may recall that Jim Lee has had a hand in designing characters for the original Injustice: Gods Among Us, when he rebuilt the Mortal Kombat character Scorpion for the game. As you can see, his design shines through again in Injustice 2. Even though Sub-Zero’s face is covered by a mysterious mask, the rest of his outfit lets you know that he’s in for some ice-cold business, with his trademark blue colors. What’s more, he’s got an incredible death stare that’s sure to make him intimidating to a few opponents. Let’s not get on his bad side, all right?
This Ultimate Is Cool
As for Sub-Zero’s super attack, it’s really something. He comes sliding in, freezing his opponent in mid-air as he trips them up, then smacking them head-on with a hammer. After that, he sends them flying in to a barrage of small icicles, which end up freezing them cold, and then he finishes the job by slamming their frozen body into the ground. It’s almost enough to make you want to say, “Chill out!” afterwards, but, nah, we’re not using any Mr. Freeze puns from Batman & Robin, thanks. Although it’s clear that with Sub-Zero’s return, the Ice Age is upon the DC universe. (Even with Captain Cold and Mr. Freeze around.)
Injustice 2 is available now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
