Will we finally see permanent console price drops this year? Both Sony and Microsoft have toyed with lowering prices, knocking $50 off the price of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One earlier this year, but the cost of both machines eventually returned to the standard $300. There are rumors a permanent PS4 discount could arrive as soon as next week, but Sony has yet to confirm anything.

Well, gaming headset maker Turtle Beach definitely thinks PS4 and Xbox One price cuts are on the way, as peripheral manufacturer had some things to say about the current console race during their most recent earnings call. According to the company’s CEO Juergen Stark, the arrival of the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro should mean discounts for the basic models of each consoleโฆ
“This holiday, PS4 Pro will have been in the market for about a year and the upcoming Xbox One X will launch. This marks the first time that the console videogame business has seen introduction of two new console systems with complete backward and forward compatibility. And it’s the first time that both Sony and Microsoft will have a two-tier product offering which may allow them to offer more competitive pricing on their lower tier models and attract new gamers into the console market.
We think new hardware launches could also boost our sales, particularly because they enable lower pricing of the economy models of Xbox One and PS4. All-in-all, assuming good sales of marquee game titles, we see a very strong holiday season for our headset business.”
Are the Turtle Beach folks just speculating about an Xbox One/PS4 price drop? Perhaps, they probably have an inside track about these sorts of things. I fully expect current-gen gaming to become more affordable than ever this holiday season (or before).
