James Gunn Assures You He’s Not Doing A Tron Sequel (Or A Handful of Others)

James Gunn still hasn’t committed to doing the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie yet — although most people seem to think the smart money is on him doing one — so it’s a bit baffling that a rumor swept through the entertainment press over the last couple of days claiming that he was working on a Tron follow-up.

Gunn has just taken to Facebook to clarify with fans that, no, he isn’t doing a Tron sequel, but instead is guilty of taking a photo of himself and a friend standing on/near a cool movie prop.

“We also have a Rocketeer mask displayed in [Disney’s] offices; I am not doing a Rocketeer movie either,” the filmmaker quipped in a Facebook post embedded below. “I once rode Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and I am not doing a Cars sequel. And, so I don’t fail to mention it, in 2007 I attended a party where Pauly Shore was, and am also not attached to Encino Man 2.“

Commenters expressing disappointment and asking whether he would consider a Tron sequel got a simple “no” from the director, who has often said that he would turn down lucrative and high-profile jobs like Star Wars because such a project wouldn’t allow him to build his own universe and craft the look of the movie in the way a film like Guardians of the Galaxy mostly does.

“I have no interest. No interest,” Gunn told ComicBook.com back in 2014. “I actually just hung out with JJ [Abrams] this morning and I f—ing love him and I love what he’s doing and I’m so incredibly excited for the new Star Wars. I mean, really honestly I am like a child inside excited for the new Star Wars. I have no interest in it. I really like creating my own thing. I wouldn’t have been interested in doing a sequel to another Marvel film. What really excited me about Guardians was being able to create my own universe and that’s what excites me. Star Wars is my thing as an audience member, but it’s not my thing as a creator; it’s not what I’m into doing.”

It’s very likely that Gunn could say the same thing about Tron, especially given its stylized look and feel.

He further noted in the Facebook post that he never took place in a purported Facebook Live chat where he supposedly admitted to being involved in developing a Tron film.
