Deadpool 2 has been a major headline maker during its ramp up to production; after a big creative change (Director Tim Miller is out, John Wick‘s David Leitch is in), casting for some key new X-Men movie universe characters has kept fans occupied.

We already know how one of those casting searches turned out, as Atlanta star Zazie Beetz has been cast as X-Force’s Domino – that just leaves the big casting search for X-Force leader Cable, and as fans have learned, it’s been a pretty extensive search. However, at least one rumored candidate to play Cable is now coming out and saying he’s not in fact in the running.
Big headlines were generated when Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Logan star Hugh Jackman tweeted out a picture of them alongside former James Bond, Pierece Brosnan, seemingly teasing Brosnan’s possible casting in the X-Men movie universe. Naturally, fans assumed the role might be Cable.
However, while on Jimmy Kimmel, Brosnan killed the Cable casting talk, stating, “not true. Nothing’s come my way yet…. I don’t lie. They know where to find me, it’s just fabricated.”
He explained the teaser photo by saying, “We were sitting, waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, ‘Quick, let’s get a photograph,’ and [I] jump in the middle and Mr. Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do Three Wise Monkeys.’ [We] put it out there and it went viral.”
When we reported on the viral photo with Reynolds, Brosnan, and Jackman, we said that it could potentially end up being a random celebrity moment, and have nothing to do with Cable – and that seems to be the case. As for who is still in the running to play Cable, here’s the latest:
- Brad Pitt has dropped out
- Michael Shannon is the frontrunner
- Stephen Lang isn’t in the running – stop wishing.
The Deadpool sequel is currently in pre-production. Reynolds will return with writer Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. David Leitch will direct. The film will introduce Deadpool’s time-traveling mutant partner, Cable, as well as X-Force member Domino. Members of the original film’s supporting cast are also expected to return.
