This year, Sony Pictures is moving full-speed ahead with its plans for comic book domination. The studio will work alongside Marvel Studios this summer to bring Spider-Man: Homecoming to fans, and Tom Holland has got people feeling confident about the hero’s newest film franchise. However, Spider-Man isn’t the only character from the spider-verse which Sony is interested in.

Earlier this month, news broke that Sony landed a premiere date for a film starring Venom. The dark character is a noted one in the Marvel Universe as Venom’s symbiotic roots turned him into a go-to villain before new storylines turned the creature into a brutal anti-hero. Since the studio is now working on Venom with purpose, fans are wondering how much the upcoming film may borrow from other scrapped scripts revolving around the character.
However, it doesn’t look like there will be too much overlap. If you ask the writers of Deadpool 2, it does not seem likely that their old Venom script will add to Sony’s new venture.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese sat down to talk about their new film Life. It was there that the pair nodded to the newly announced Venom film and looked back on their own work with the baddie.
“We haven’t read that script in so long,” Wernick said, referring to the pair’s take on Venom. “We were out on the set of Zombieland and we had turned it in. That would have been 2007, 2008. โฆ Not having read it, it’s hard. But we were immensely proud of that script. My guess is there are things if we would go back and read it, we would want to change things, but there are also things that we think, ‘Oh my God, that’s so cool.’”
After a moment, Rheese then admitted he didn’t believe Sony was clinging to any part of their original story. “I don’t think that draft is being used in the creation of the movie. They have got to have moved on from it a long time ago, there have been other writers.”
“I think there may be an element or two that has survived, but that might be it,” Wernick agreed.
The Deadpool sequel is currently in pre-production. Reynolds will return with writer Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. David Leitch will direct. The film will introduce Deadpool’s time-traveling mutant partner, Cable, as well as X-Force member Domino. Members of the original film’s supporting cast are also expected to return.
Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapiฤiฤ.
