There won’t be an Avengers movie hitting theaters in 2017 but a whole slew of Marvel heroes are making their way to the big screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s canon.

With three films coming from the studio in the same year for the first time ever, the line-up of Marvel heroes is gigantic. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok set to debut throughout the year, over a dozen heroes are headed to the silver screen — some of which have taken a couple of years off since their last appearance and other which will be making surprising second appearances.
On the following slides, we explore the list of Marvel Studios heroes confirmed to appear in the 2017 slate of films.
Thor
In Thor: Ragnarok, the son of Odin is imprisoned on the other side of the universe. The mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War. Now, it’s his turn to have a standalone, self-titled feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7, 2017.
ย
Iron Man
Joining Spider-Man in his standalone debut is Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man.
Iron Man’s role in Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to be small. The movie still qualifies as a standalone effort. It is a story about Peter Parker in which Stark will inevitably play a role after dragging him into the world of super heroes for a fight with Captain America.ย
ย
The Hulk
The Hulk and Thorย have a bit of a history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two characters exchanged a few blows back in 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers.ย
When they meet again in Thor: Ragnarok after appearing ro have built a bit of chemistry in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they’ll be duking it out once again according to the movie’s synopsis.ย
Either way, the big green rage monster will be gracing our movie theaters in November of 2017.
ย
Doctor Strange
One of the more surprising names we can expect to see make their way back to big screen in 2017 is Doctor Strange.
After debuting in November of 2016 with hs origin story, the Sorcerer Supreme will have to team up with Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. The details of the role and how much of an element for the film he will be is still unknown.
ย
Star-Lord
Making his way to the big screen for the first time since debuting in 2014, Peter Quill is finally back.
Star-Lord will pick up where he left off for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in may of 2017.
The film takes place after the events of Guardians Of The Galaxy, and the team begins taking on numerous missions throughout space. The threat of Thanos is still looming large over their heads, and Gamora is especially worried about the villain, given that he’s her step-father. Peter Quill is as sarcastic as ever, but he’s still struggling with his own issues. While trying to hide his true feelings for Gamora, he is also on a quest to discover the true identity of his father.
ย
Loki
Though he is not technically a hero, Loki will be appearing in Thor: Ragnarok with his brother Thor.
Last seen on the throne of Asgard, Loki might be the reason that Hela is unleashing such vengeance on Thor’s home. How this will effect the relationship between the brothers will be interesting but what’s more is how Loki will handle the possibility of encountering the Hulk for the first time since his “puny god” beatdown in The Avengers.
ย
Odin
Anthony Hopkins’ Odin will be making an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok.ย
Following up on Loki’s seat on the Asgardian throne, Odin must be banished somewhere considering he is still alive. When he reveals the circumstances of being booted from the throne to Thor, we can only imagine the God of Thuner will be none too pleased with his brother.
ย
Drax
Drax the Destroyer has one thing in mind: kill Thanos.
Will he do it in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? No. But he’ll continue his path toward avenging his familys death when he returns to the big screen in May. This time around, he is integrated in the Guardians familial style of life and is said to be one of the best parts of the film.
ย
Rocket & Groot
You can’t have the Guardians of the Galaxy with Rocket and Groot.
The talking baby tree and raccoon will be back with Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper performing their voices, once again. This time around, Groot is still a baby after being reduced to a pile of sticks in the aftermath of the battle with Ronan.
ย
Gamora
No surprise that we’ll be seeing Gamora in Gaurdians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The character, played by Zoe Saldana, is as much a part of the squad as any other member. She’ll be returning as the Guardians explore new worlds and encounter the new villain, Ayesha.
ย
Yondu
Also siding with the good guys in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is Yondu. The blue-faced character played by Michael Rooker will serve as a link between Peter Quill and his father Ego, the Living Planet (played by Kurt Russell).
How Yondu reacts to being faked out on the Infinity Stone will be a sight to see, though.
ย
Heimdall
Last seen in Thor’s dream sequence in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Idras Elba is back in the mix as Heimdall for Thor: Ragnarok.ย
Given the fact that Thor will likely be on an avid search for Odin upon discovering Loki is sitting on the throne of Asgard, Heimdall’s all seeing eyes might play a key role in assisting the God of Thunder.
ย
Mantis
ย
Joining the Guardians of the Galaxy this time around will be newcomer to the MCU, Mantis.
Like her comic book counterpart, the newest member of the superhero team is sporting a pair of antennae; however, Klementieff’s Mantis doesn’t have green skin and her dark-green leather costume with black trim is a departure from her traditional comic book appearance.ย
Mantis brings a unique power set to the Guardians, best described by her line in the trailer: “If I touch someone, I can feel their feelings!”
ย
Speculation
Also siding with the good guys for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be Yondu.ย
Michael Rooker’s blue-faced hero will have grown a full fin on the top of his head this time around but might have grown a heart as well. The character doesn’t appear to be as out-to-get Peter Quill as he did in the original but will also likely serve as the link between Quill and his father. Ego, played by Kurt Russell, will be introduced in the sequel.
