It hasn’t been too long since Marvel Studios ushered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to theaters, but work is already underway on the series’ threequel. Director James Gunn has confirmed he will be overseeing the third Guardians film, and the writer is already churning out teasers for the MCU’s cosmic future. Now, it looks like one of the director’s tweets has gone a bit too far and possibly revealed a surprising heroic addition to Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Taking to Twitter, Gunn shared an odd photo earlier today. “For some reason I’m just remembering now that as a kid my family’s VCR had wood paneling,” the director wrote out of the blue, but Marvel fans were quick to spot a teaser hiding within the photo. The retro VHS player which Gunn shared with fans boasts a specific brand name, and it is none other than Quasar.
Now, does that get your mind racing? It should if you are familiar with the Marvel Universe.
Back in January 1978, Captain America #217 introduced a character named Neutron to the Marvel Universe. Don Glut and Roy Thomas wrote up the cosmic being, and fans came to know the man as Quasar. Originally an X-Men figure, Neutron adopted the Quasar moniker in 1990, but the superhero has undergone several iterations since. Wendell Vaughn, Phyla-Vell, Richard Rider, and Avril Kincaid have adopted Quasar’s name over the years.
The cosmic superhero has close ties to heroes such as Nova, and the character wields some impressive powers. Quasar gets its powers from the Quantum Bands fused to its wielders wrists as they are loaded with powerful gems. The bands allow Quasar to manipulate energy and tap into the limitless energy of the Quantum Zone which fans may recall from the MCU’s excursion with Ant-Man. The weapons were created by Eon for the Protect of the Universe to bear, and Vaughn’s run as Quasar unlocked many of the secrets surrounding the weapon’s true potential.
So far, Quasar has not been introduced to the MCU, but that does not mean the hero cannot be introduced. Gunn has said that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will set up future cosmic storylines, so one of Quasar’s iterations could be teased in the upcoming film. With ties to both Nova and Captain Marvel, Quasar could help broaden the MCU’s roster of heroes, and fans would be hyped to see the hero make their debut.
