Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 director James Gunn today confirmed that the film will be the first-ever Disney release to come to the home video market in 4K UltraHD.

There is still no official release date for the DVD and Blu-ray, although Gunn said that more announcements will be coming “soon” from the studio, and cautioned fans against believing reports that he or Disney have not vetted. He noted that release dates and DVD details can leak out, often not in their final or official form.

This has been a consistent problem for major tentpole releases, as retailers like Walmart and Amazon learn and then post tentative details of home video releases.

Currently, rumors peg the Blu-ray release of Guardians 2 as August 22, based on what appears to be a video-industry trade advertisement posted to a fan-fun Facebook page.

Gunn, who also confirmed that there will be a 3D home release (this is fairly common to big Disney movies, going back as far as Cars 2 and Marvel’s The Avengers), explained the importance of the format for Guardians in particular:

“4K UltraHD is almost certainly the best way you can see this movie at home – with more definition and the most vibrant colors possible on your home screen, and with the brightest brights and the blackest blacks,” Gunn wrote to Facebook. “A being composed of light truly appears to be a being composed of light! This version is a roiling cinematic river of beauty and I’ve taken hundreds of hours personally making it look the best it can. This is one of the reasons why LIGHT and COLOR are such important elements of Vol. 2’s story, and why we screened the World Premiere in Los Angeles in essentially this format.”

Gunn said that the home release will have “some unbelievably cool additional content, including something that’s so amazing I’ve been chomping at the bit for months not being able to talk about it!”

An easy guess on that front would be that Gunn may have secretly filmed a One Shot short film — something that used to be a staple on Marvel’s home video releases but has been absent since Iron Man 3. Recently, Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland suggested that the shorts could be making a return. That would, however, merely be speculation.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now.
