Joss Whedon is known for many reasons, and one such reason is his love for strong female characters. The writer and director has helmed dozens of projects which feature no-nonsense heroines who save the day without sacrificing their femininity. Take for instance Buffy Summers: the high schooler is a cheerleader by day and vampire slayer by night. It would be hard to take down a girl like that - that is, unless you are Agents of SHIELD’s Melinda May.
Since the latter heroine debuted in Marvel’s hit drama, fans have wondered which character would win in a fight. Now, Whedon is weighing in on the debate by saying who he thinks would win the champion’s belt.
On Tumblr, the filmmaker told fans that Buffy has got some “big-a** powers” that ultimately give her an edge against Agent May. Whedon went on to say, “Love to see them spar, though - it’d be a workout.”
Of course, there are some fans who do not agree with Whedon’s tap-out. Fans of Agents of SHIELD don’t say how Agent May could be bested by a teenaged vampire slayer; After all, Melinda isn’t called the cavalry for no reason. If the SHIELD agent can take out a building of armed assailants to save a young girl then surely she could take down Buffy Summer’s wooden stakes?
Well, it’s hard to tell.
While Buffy might seem petite, she is by no means breakable. The girl is known as a Chosen One who is gifted with the strength and skills to slay undead vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings. Her body count is pretty extensive, so the showdown between Buffy and Agent May would one for the books.
This isn’t the first Buffy-related debacle that Whedon has commented on recently. In fact, the creator spoke with Complex earlier this fall and confessed he was a Buffy/Spike shipper to the confusion of many fans.
“I’m a Buffy/Spike shipper,” he said. “I always felt like he was a more evolved person, but that’s like saying Juliet’s going to be so happy with Benvolio and everyone will love it. Buffy/Angel is for the ages; Buffy/Spike is maybe for me.”

Mny fans weren’t expecting that answer to come from Whedon. After all, audiences were less-than-thrilled with how Spike wooed Buffy in the cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character was introduced in Season Six as a sarcastic, bad boy with a secret heart of gold. The destructive character made Buffy swoon for his devilish charms (and embarrassing hair), but fans struggled to support the two’s relationship because of their lingering attachment to Angel.
While Whedon’s thoughts about a Buffy/Melinda face-off aren’t quite as controversial as his shipping opinions, they are enough to make fans wonder which of the girls would actually win a battle head on. So, what do you think? Do you believe Buffy could take down Agent Coulson’s right-hand woman? Or would Agent May have Buffy pleading for mercy by the end of Round One?
